Ways to get help with your FSSA benefits

If you receive FSSA benefits, or work with people who do, you know that there have been changes in the Family and Social Services Administration. The new system was rolled out locally in March, and this has presented some clients and agencies with issues receiving services like TANF, Food Stamps, and Medicaid.

United Way, along with social service agencies, state legislators, and local government officials sponsored a Town Hall Meeting on Wednesday, June 25 at Ivy Tech Community College to discuss ways the system can be improved.

This contact information might help you:

If you need help receiving FSSA benefits, check the Department of Family Resources site for information about Food Stamps, Medicaid, and other FSSA programs. You can also call the regional service center at 800-403-0864.  The DFR office is located at 1787 West 3rd Street near Landmark Avenue (click the address for a map) in Bloomington.

You can also contact your township trustee about help with FSSA and other benefits.  Thanks to Bloomington Township Trustee Linda Sievers for providing this list of all the trustees in Monroe County. If you aren't sure what Monroe County township you are in, you can use this map.

If you need further help or have suggestions about ways benefits can be provided, you can contact your state legislators: Senator Vi Simpson, Representative Peggy Welch, Representative Matt Pierce.  Outside Monroe County, enter your zip code on this page to determine your legislators.

You might also try the Indiana Public Health and Assistance Helpline, managed by the Mental Health America of Indiana under FSSA contract, at 877-246-3243.

If your situation requires federal assistance, you can contact US Congressman Baron Hill at 812-336-3000.  Congressman Steve Buyer serves the townships on the western edge of Monroe County.  Outside Monroe County, enter your zip code on this page to determine your federal representatives.

You may also wish to contact case workers at social services you've worked with.  If you are low-income and need civil legal assistance, you can contact Indiana Legal Services.  For information about all the social service agencies in Monroe and Owen Counties, call 2-1-1 or visit 211infolink.  You can also link to Indiana 211, which provides info about agencies around the state.  211Infolink is a free service provided by Area 10 Agency on Aging, United Way, Monroe County Government, and other community partners.

If you believe you need to file a complaint regarding food stamps, contact Tim English at the Food and Nutrition Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (312-353-1533). Regarding Medicaid problems, you can file a complaint with Brenda Delgado of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (312-353-1446).

Do not let situations become serious.  Contact those who can help while things are still stable. They can help you get and keep benefits to which you are entitled.
